The SPE Dhaka University Student Chapter celebrates a remarkable achievement - its first-ever fully-funded geological field excursion to Sylhet, Bangladesh!
From March 20th to 21st, 2021, a diverse group of 20 students, ranging from first-year undergraduates to Master's students, embarked on this enriching journey. Led by esteemed faculty members Professor Dr. Anwar Bhuiyan and Ms. Masuma Chowdhury, the program provided a unique opportunity for hands-on learning. Students explored various geological structures, studied the stratigraphic sequence of the Surma Basin, and gained insights into the lithology of different formations.
The trip unfolded like a geological expedition, with students encountering formations like Tipam Sandstone, Surma Group, Barail Group, Kopili Shale, and Sylhet Limestone. Notably, the Sylhet Limestone held the distinction of being the oldest exposed rock in the area. Day one covered key sections like Nayagang-Rangapani-Noljuri-Tamabil and Dauki, while day two focused on Lalakhal-Tetulghat.
The Surma Basin, a geological treasure trove in Bangladesh, served as a natural classroom. Students not only witnessed the basin's stratigraphy but also gained valuable understanding of its depositional environment, laying the groundwork for comprehending sequence stratigraphy.
Beyond academics, the program fostered interaction and knowledge sharing among students of various academic levels. Detailed evening discussions at the base camp provided a platform for deeper analysis of their field observations.
The SPE DU Chapter extends its heartfelt gratitude to Professor Dr. Syed Humayun Akhter, Professor Dr. Anwar Hossain Bhuiyan, and Ms. Masuma Chowdhury for their invaluable guidance and support, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone, not just for the SPE DU Chapter but for all student chapters within the Department of Geology at the University of Dhaka. The program, fully funded by the chapter, saw the participation of 20 enthusiastic students alongside two esteemed faculty members. The chapter meticulously implemented all necessary COVID-19 precautions to ensure everyone's safety.
The SPE DU Chapter remains dedicated to enriching the educational experience of its members. This successful field trip serves as a testament to their unwavering commitment to fostering knowledge and exploration in the field of geology.
