An Industrial Field Visit to Kailashtila Gas Field & Sylhet Gas Field Limited (6-7 January 2022)

SPE Dhaka University Chapter has successfully organized a three-day long field trip at Sylhet Gas Field Limited, Chiknagul, Sylhet with 30 students (2nd Year to 4th Year) including SPE DU executives and 2 faculty members. The field was led by Dr. Badrul Imam and Professor Dr. Anwar Bhuiyan, Department of Geology, University of Dhaka. We visited Haripur Gas Field, Kailashtila Gas Field and Rashidpur Gas Field. The main purpose of the field work is to get acquainted with the overall drilling system, exploration and production techniques of natural gas and oil. Our respectable teachers and the Managing Director of SGFL beautifully explained the 4 systems of Drilling: i) Circulating System ii) Rotary System iii) Hoisting system & iv) Blowout Preventing System (BOP). 

On the first day, we have visited the workover drilling site of Haripur Gas Field Well-8. Md. Mizanur Rahman Sir, Managing Director of SGFL described the components of logging unit and showed us how to interpret the log data for exploration of oil and gas. Then the respected officers of Haripur Gas Field taught us different drilling components and procedures of extracting natural gas.  

On the second day, we have visited the process plant in Kailashtila Gas Field. The General Manager of SGFL clearly explained the procedures of producing NGL (Natural Gas Liquids) from natural gas.  

On the third day, we have visited the Rashidpur Gas field and observed the refinery system of natural gas. The GM of SGFL demonstrated about increasing the octane number of petrol and the production of LPG.  

Students from 2nd year to 4th year had the opportunity to interact with each other and learn together. We are very much grateful to our respected teachers and the officials of SGFL for their detailed discussion about exploration, drilling and production of natural gas. This fieldwork was very much beneficial to the students of Department of Geology, University of Dhaka.
